The Trademarks Act, 1999 was brought into force on 15th September 2003. It is only under the Trademarks Act, 1999 the concept of “well known trademarks” gained its statutory recognition. Coca Cola, Benz, Toyota, Tata, Infosys, Microsoft, Google are some of the well known trademarks. During its life time, a trademark crosses four stages – unknown; known to customers and people around the region of operation; well known; too well known that the trademark attains the status of the word giving a generic meaning such as Fridge.
